Why Energy Efficiency Can Create New Challenges
Modern homes are often designed to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency. Better insulation, airtight windows, and improved building standards can reduce energy bills, but they also make ventilation more important.
Older homes often had natural air leaks that allowed fresh air to enter. Newer airtight homes need controlled ventilation to remove moisture and stale air.
One common issue is closed trickle vents. These small openings in window frames provide background ventilation, but many homeowners and renters keep them shut because they feel they let cold air into the room.
However, blocking ventilation can trap moisture indoors and increase the risk of condensation and mould.
This situation is similar to the problems seen in offices after energy-saving measures in previous decades. Buildings became more sealed, ventilation was reduced, and occupants reported symptoms such as headaches, tiredness, and irritation. This became known as sick building syndrome.

Opening bedroom windows fully for 10 to 15 minutes after waking can quickly remove stale air and excess moisture. This practice, sometimes called “house burping”, is based on the German tradition of airing homes regularly.
Short bursts of ventilation usually lose less heat than leaving windows slightly open all day.
Keep Trickle Vents Open
If your windows have trickle vents, avoid keeping them permanently closed. They provide continuous background airflow and can help reduce moisture buildup.
Leave the Bedroom Door Open
Keeping the bedroom door slightly open can improve air movement and allow moisture to spread into better-ventilated areas of the home.
Consider a Dehumidifier
A dehumidifier can be useful in cold or damp bedrooms, especially during winter when opening windows may feel uncomfortable.
Most modern dehumidifiers include a humidistat, which measures humidity and automatically switches the device on and off to maintain a chosen level. A bedroom humidity level around 40% to 60% is generally considered a sensible target.
A dehumidifier will not replace proper ventilation, but it can help control excess moisture when other solutions are limited.
