Mosquitoes can identify differences in these smells. Some people produce a scent profile that mosquitoes find especially attractive, while others may be less appealing.

• Removing standing water around homes and gardens, as mosquitoes breed in small collections of water.

There is limited scientific evidence that popular remedies such as eating garlic or taking vitamin B supplements prevent mosquito bites. Reliable repellents and physical protection remain the most effective options.

Mosquitoes are not randomly choosing their victims. They are following a detailed biological map created by signals from our bodies.

Some people really are more appealing targets, but everyone can still be bitten. Even those who rarely notice bites should take precautions, especially in areas where mosquitoes can spread diseases.
