Nurdle Pollution Threatens Seabirds Along North East Coast, Charity Warns
Plastic pollution along the North East coast of England is raising serious concerns for seabirds and marine wildlife after thousands of tiny plastic pellets known as nurdles washed ashore following a shipping accident at the Port of Tyne.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has warned that seabirds could face serious health risks if they eat the pellets directly or consume fish that have already ingested them.
The incident has highlighted the wider dangers posed by nurdle pollution, particularly during a period when many seabirds are feeding themselves and their young.
What are nurdles and why are they a problem?
Nurdles are small plastic pellets used as a raw material in the production of many everyday plastic products. Their small size and lightweight nature mean they can easily be transported by water and spread across beaches and coastal areas.
Following a collision involving two vessels at the Port of Tyne, two shipping containers were damaged and tonnes of plastic pellets entered the marine environment.
The pellets subsequently appeared on beaches across parts of the North East, including areas around Tynemouth, Northumberland and Sunderland.
Because nurdles can resemble small food particles, wildlife may mistake them for prey or consume them accidentally.
The RSPB has warned that this could have particularly serious consequences for birds.
Seabirds could mistake plastic pellets for food
Images and footage from Low Lights beach in Tynemouth appeared to show seabirds picking up and eating nurdles.
According to the RSPB, birds are especially vulnerable at this time of year because they are feeding both themselves and their chicks.
When plastic pellets are swallowed, they can occupy space in a bird's stomach without providing any nutritional value. This can potentially leave the animal unable to consume enough real food.
In severe cases, the accumulation of plastic could contribute to starvation or choking.
Zia Fikardos, a marine policy officer at the RSPB, explained that plastic can also become more difficult for wildlife to distinguish from food after remaining in the marine environment.
The organisation has previously highlighted the presence of plastic in the digestive systems of dead seabirds.
The concern is therefore not simply that an individual bird might swallow a plastic pellet. Repeated exposure could potentially create a wider problem for marine species living and feeding in affected areas.
Nurdles could enter the wider food chain
Direct consumption is only one part of the environmental concern.
Fish can also accidentally ingest nurdles while feeding in contaminated waters. Those fish may then become prey for larger animals, potentially allowing plastic to move through the marine food chain.
The Tyne Rivers Trust has reported finding fish containing nurdles in their digestive systems and described the situation as an environmental disaster.
The potential food-chain impact could extend beyond fish. Seabirds, seals and dolphins may all be exposed to plastic pollution either directly or through their prey.
This makes the incident more than a beach-cleaning issue. The effects could potentially reach marine ecosystems well beyond the areas where pellets are visible on the shoreline.
Why could the pollution last for years?
One of the biggest concerns surrounding nurdles is their persistence.
Unlike food or organic material, plastic pellets do not simply break down and disappear after a short period. Some can remain in the marine environment for decades.
That means removing visible nurdles from beaches is important, but it may not completely eliminate the environmental risk.
Small pellets can become scattered among sand, rocks, seaweed and other coastal material. Some can also remain offshore or move with currents before reaching another location.
The RSPB has therefore warned that the full consequences of the spill may not become clear immediately.
Bird populations in the region are already facing multiple pressures, including climate change, reduced availability of prey, disease, accidental capture, habitat loss and other forms of pollution.
Additional plastic pollution could place further pressure on species that are already vulnerable.
Nurdles found along several North East beaches
In the days following the incident, nurdles were reported in several coastal locations, including areas as far as Northumberland and Sunderland.
Sunderland Council said the number of pellets found in its area was lower than in some other locations.
The RSPB said it had not recorded sick or dead birds at its Saltholme and Coquet Island nature reserves in connection with the incident. However, the charity also noted that monitoring the effects of pollution incidents is not its primary responsibility.
The absence of reported bird deaths does not necessarily mean there is no environmental impact.
Some consequences of plastic ingestion can take time to become apparent, while birds can also travel significant distances between feeding and nesting areas.
Calls for a stronger clean-up response
The response to the spill has also attracted criticism from environmental campaigners.
Some campaigners have argued that the clean-up operation has been too slow, while North East Mayor Kim McGuinness criticised the Environment Agency's response.
The Port of Tyne has said it acted quickly to contain the spill.
The Environment Agency has also rejected suggestions that it was absent from the response, saying it had been involved from the beginning and was working with local authorities, the port and other organisations.
The incident has nevertheless renewed questions about how quickly plastic pollution from shipping accidents can be detected, contained and removed.
What happens next?
An investigation by the Environment Agency is under way as authorities and other organisations continue to assess the impact of the nurdle spill.
For conservation groups, the priority is likely to be preventing further exposure of wildlife and removing as much plastic from the marine environment as possible.
The incident also demonstrates why nurdle pollution can be difficult to manage. Their tiny size means individual pellets can easily escape detection, while tides and currents can transport them over large distances.
Long-term monitoring could therefore be important in determining whether wildlife populations experience measurable effects.
A warning about the wider plastic pollution problem
The North East nurdle spill provides a stark example of how an industrial accident can quickly become an environmental problem.
For seabirds, the danger is not limited to swallowing visible plastic on a beach. Pellets can enter the marine food chain, where they may be consumed by fish and subsequently exposed to predators.
With plastic pollution already widespread throughout the world's oceans, conservation organisations say incidents such as this can add to existing pressures on marine wildlife.
The RSPB's warning that the consequences could be devastating underlines the importance of preventing plastic from entering the sea in the first place, as well as responding rapidly when spills occur.
For communities along the North East coast, the focus now remains on cleaning affected beaches, monitoring wildlife and understanding the longer-term environmental consequences of the Port of Tyne incident.
