A 25-year-old liver transplant survivor shares his emotional recovery journey after liver failure caused severe jaundice and changed his appearance. His story raises awareness about rare liver conditions.

A young man who experienced a dramatic health crisis after liver failure has opened up about the emotional impact of his condition, revealing that he still feels nervous about going outside because of fears that people will stare at him.

Kieran Cooper, aged 25 from Northwich, Cheshire, faced a life-threatening medical emergency when complications with his liver caused his skin to become a striking yellow colour due to severe jaundice. During the frightening period, he joked that he looked like a character from The Simpsons, but behind the humour was a difficult battle that left him physically and emotionally exhausted.

The liver transplant survivor is now sharing his story to raise awareness about rare liver conditions and the challenges patients can face before and after major surgery.

A Sudden Health Crisis After Years of Living With Liver Problems

Kieran’s health journey began when he was only a newborn. He was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare condition that affects the bile ducts in babies and prevents normal bile flow from the liver.

Because of this condition, Kieran developed jaundice as an infant. His first treatment was unsuccessful, and he later required a liver transplant when he was just 11 months old in 2002.

For many years after the transplant, Kieran was able to live a relatively normal life. However, years later, complications began affecting his health again.

By 2023, he was placed on a waiting list for another liver transplant as his condition continued to worsen. In January 2026, his health deteriorated significantly, and he was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Doctors discovered that his liver was failing, leading to a dangerous build-up of bilirubin, a substance that can cause yellowing of the skin and eyes.

After spending five weeks in hospital, Kieran received a second liver transplant on February 28, 2026.

The Emotional Impact of Looking Different

Before his transplant, Kieran’s skin became a very noticeable yellow colour. While he tried to make light of the situation by comparing himself to Bart Simpson, he admitted that the attention from strangers affected his confidence.

He explained that walking outside became difficult because people often looked at him.

The experience made him feel self-conscious, especially because his appearance attracted unwanted attention during an already challenging time.

Although his skin colour returned to normal after the transplant, the emotional effects remained. Kieran said he still feels anxious about going out because of the memories of being stared at.

His experience highlights an important issue faced by many people living with visible health conditions. Physical symptoms can affect not only a person’s body but also their confidence, mental wellbeing, and daily life.

Recovery After a Second Liver Transplant

While the transplant saved Kieran’s life, recovery has not been easy. He described the period after surgery as extremely painful and said he needed to relearn how to walk.

Major surgeries such as organ transplants often require long recovery periods, ongoing medical monitoring, and lifestyle adjustments.

Kieran continues to attend hospital appointments every six weeks and needs lifelong medication to help protect his new liver.

Despite the challenges, he says he feels grateful to be alive and is focused on rebuilding his life.

He is currently unable to work because of his health but hopes that sharing his story can help others understand the realities of living with serious medical conditions.

Family’s Fear During His Health Battle

Kieran’s family also experienced a deeply emotional period while he was waiting for his transplant.

His mother, Kerry Cooper, described the situation as extremely difficult and said the family feared they could lose him.

She recalled how quickly his condition worsened and how shocking it was to see his appearance change.

According to Kerry, Kieran’s yellow complexion became increasingly noticeable, and strangers often stared when he went outside.

The family’s experience demonstrates the emotional challenges faced by relatives of transplant patients, who often live with uncertainty while waiting for life-saving treatment.

Raising Awareness About Rare Liver Conditions

Kieran hopes that sharing his story will encourage more people to learn about liver disease, transplant journeys, and the importance of recognising unusual health symptoms.

Biliary atresia remains a rare condition, but early diagnosis and specialist treatment can improve outcomes for affected babies.

His story also highlights the importance of organ donation. Liver transplants can provide a second chance at life for people suffering from severe liver failure.

By speaking publicly about his experience, Kieran wants others facing medical struggles to know they are not alone.

Life After Transplant: A New Beginning

Although Kieran has experienced years of medical challenges, he remains positive about the future.

From being diagnosed as a baby to undergoing two liver transplants, his journey has involved major obstacles. However, he continues to recover and adapt to life after surgery.

His story is a reminder that recovery is not only about physical healing. Emotional recovery and rebuilding confidence can take time too.

Kieran’s message is simple: surviving a serious illness is a major achievement, but adjusting to life afterwards can be its own challenge.

By sharing his journey, he hopes to inspire others and bring attention to people living with rare medical conditions.
