Ebola Death Toll Surpasses 2,500 as Congo Outbreak Becomes Second-Deadliest in History
The Ebola outbreak in Central Africa has reached a grim milestone, with more than 2,500 people now confirmed to have died, according to health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Officials reported on Aug. 21 that the outbreak had resulted in 2,516 deaths and 5,290 confirmed cases.
The figures make the current outbreak the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, surpassed only by the West African epidemic that began in 2014 and ultimately killed more than 11,000 people.
The situation is particularly concerning because health officials say the outbreak is spreading at a faster pace than earlier Ebola epidemics. Dr. Jean Kaseya, director-general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, said that by the 13th week of the current outbreak, the number of cases was roughly 10 times higher than during the comparable period of the 2014 outbreak. Deaths were also approximately seven times higher.
Congo at the Center of the Outbreak
The vast majority of reported infections and deaths have occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country with a population of roughly 124 million people. Ebola can spread through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person. The disease can cause severe symptoms, including fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea and, in serious cases, internal and external bleeding.

Why the Current Outbreak Is So Concerning
The speed at which the outbreak has expanded is one of the primary reasons health officials are worried.
Previous Ebola outbreaks have demonstrated that rapid detection and early intervention can significantly reduce transmission. When infections spread faster than surveillance and treatment systems can respond, however, controlling an epidemic becomes substantially more difficult.
