Sugary Drinks and Stomach Cancer: What a New Study Really Found

A new study has raised concerns about a possible connection between sugary drinks and stomach cancer. Researchers analysing health and lifestyle data from more than 100,000 adults found that people who regularly consumed sugar-sweetened beverages appeared to have a higher risk of developing gastric cancer.

The findings are significant because stomach cancer remains a major global health concern. However, the research does not prove that drinking sugary beverages directly causes cancer. Instead, it identifies an association that researchers say needs to be investigated further.

What did the study find?

The study examined health information from 112,000 people collected over several decades. During the research period, 278 participants developed gastric cancer.

Researchers reported that people drinking at least one serving of a sugar-sweetened beverage each day had more than twice the risk of gastric cancer compared with those who consumed fewer than one serving per month.

The association was seen in both men and women. Among women, consuming more than one sugar-sweetened beverage per day was associated with an almost threefold increase in gastric cancer risk compared with rare consumption.

The drinks included products such as soft drinks, lemonade, fruit punch and sports drinks. Fructose was the main sweetener identified in the beverages consumed by participants, and higher fructose consumption was also associated with a greater incidence of gastric cancer.

These findings are particularly notable because previous research has already investigated possible links between sugary drinks and several other cancers, including colorectal, breast and liver cancer. Evidence concerning stomach cancer has been comparatively limited.

Why is stomach cancer important?

Gastric cancer develops in the stomach and is among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. According to the researchers, it is the fifth leading cause of cancer death globally.

There are several established risk factors for stomach cancer. One of the best-known is infection with Helicobacter pylori, commonly known as H. pylori. This bacterium can cause inflammation of the stomach lining and has been associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer.

Other factors can include smoking, certain dietary patterns, family history and some underlying stomach conditions.

The new research explored whether H. pylori infection could explain the relationship between sugary drinks and gastric cancer. Researchers examined H. pylori information for a smaller group of 940 participants.

They did not find an association between sugary beverage consumption and H. pylori infection. This suggests that the observed relationship may not simply be explained by differences in infection rates, although the available data were limited.

What about diet drinks and artificial sweeteners?

One of the more interesting findings concerned artificially sweetened and low-calorie carbonated beverages.

The study did not find that higher consumption of these drinks was associated with an increased incidence of gastric cancer. This contrasts with the findings for sugar-sweetened beverages.

However, this result should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that artificially sweetened drinks protect against stomach cancer. The study was observational, meaning researchers observed patterns in existing health data rather than assigning participants to consume particular beverages.

There may also be other differences between people who choose sugary drinks and those who choose low-calorie alternatives. Lifestyle, diet, weight, physical activity and other health factors could potentially influence cancer risk.

Does drinking a sugary drink cause stomach cancer?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the most important points when interpreting the study. The researchers found an association, but they did not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship.

Observational studies can identify patterns, but they cannot completely rule out other explanations. Even when researchers adjust their analysis for numerous potential risk factors, unknown or incompletely measured factors can remain.

The researchers also highlighted several limitations. Information about H. pylori infection was available for only a small subset of participants, while information about family history of gastric cancer was limited.

The study population was also predominantly white, which restricted researchers' ability to assess whether the findings differ across racial and ethnic groups.

Further research will therefore be needed before scientists can determine whether sugary beverages independently increase the risk of gastric cancer and, if so, understand the biological mechanisms involved.

Why might sugary drinks be linked to cancer risk?

Scientists have not established exactly why sugar-sweetened beverages might be associated with gastric cancer.

One possibility involves the metabolic effects of consuming large amounts of added sugar and fructose. High consumption of sugary drinks can contribute to excess calorie intake and weight gain, while obesity and metabolic health are themselves linked to several diseases.

Researchers may also investigate whether dietary patterns associated with frequent sugary drink consumption play a role. People who drink soft drinks regularly may differ from infrequent consumers in other aspects of their diet and lifestyle.

At present, however, these possibilities remain areas for further investigation rather than confirmed explanations for the study's findings.

What should consumers do?

The study does not mean that people who occasionally drink a soft drink should panic. It does, however, add to the wider evidence supporting moderation of sugar-sweetened beverages.

For people looking to reduce their intake, practical alternatives include water, sparkling water without added sugar and unsweetened drinks. Reducing sugary drinks can also help lower overall free sugar consumption and may support healthier dietary habits.

Anyone experiencing persistent digestive symptoms, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, blood in the stool or ongoing stomach pain should speak with a healthcare professional rather than attempting to diagnose the cause themselves.

The bottom line

The new research provides evidence of a possible relationship between regular consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and stomach cancer. Daily consumers in the study had more than twice the risk of gastric cancer compared with people who rarely consumed these drinks.

But the findings should be interpreted carefully. The study was observational and cannot prove that sugary drinks cause stomach cancer. Researchers have also identified important limitations, including incomplete information about H. pylori infection and family history, as well as the demographic composition of the participants.

For now, the research adds another reason to moderate sugary drinks while highlighting the need for larger and more diverse studies. It is an important finding, but it is not definitive proof of a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
