Rising COVID Cases in China Trigger Fresh Health Concerns Amid New Summer Surge

China is facing a renewed wave of COVID-19 infections as official surveillance data shows a sharp increase in positive cases during the summer months. The country’s COVID-19 positivity rate has crossed the 20 percent mark for the first time this year, raising concerns among health experts and the public about another significant outbreak.

According to data released on July 30 by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), COVID-19 positivity rates reached 20.3 percent between July 20 and July 26. This represents a major increase compared with three weeks earlier, when the positivity rate was recorded at 9.6 percent.

The latest figures come from China’s national acute respiratory infection sentinel surveillance system, which monitors trends in respiratory illnesses across the country. The data indicates that COVID-19 has become one of the leading detected infections across multiple age groups.

Health authorities reported that southern provinces experienced higher positive detection rates compared with northern regions. The dominant circulating strain identified in the latest surveillance period was the NB.1.8.1 variant lineage, a newer descendant within the Omicron family of variants.

Public Reports Point to Growing Infections Across Chinese Cities

While official data provides some insight into the current situation, reports from residents across China suggest that infections may be spreading widely in several regions.

Social media users from cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, and areas of Shanxi have shared personal accounts of testing positive for COVID-19. Some residents have reported entire households becoming infected, indicating that transmission may be occurring rapidly within communities.

A Shanghai resident described experiencing a severe illness during the latest wave, saying symptoms included fever, digestive problems, intense throat pain, coughing, and vomiting. The individual also reported that hospitals were crowded, with long waiting times for medical consultations.

The reports have increased public discussion about the severity of the current wave and whether healthcare systems in certain regions may face additional pressure if cases continue rising.

Doctors Warn of Increased Pressure on Hospitals

Medical professionals in China have also commented on the recent increase in COVID-19 cases. On July 31, a traditional Chinese medicine doctor posted on social media that COVID-19 had returned strongly.

Another doctor in Shandong reportedly described crowded emergency departments and limited availability of hospital beds, highlighting concerns about healthcare capacity during periods of increased infection.

Although individual reports do not represent nationwide conditions, they reflect growing anxiety among some communities as more people report illness and seek medical care.

Taiwan Also Sees COVID-19 Cases Increase

The rise in COVID-19 activity is not limited to mainland China. Taiwan has also reported an increase in infections and severe cases.

According to surveillance information released by Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control, COVID-19 related outpatient and emergency visits increased significantly during the latest reporting period. The country recorded 18,990 COVID-related medical visits in one week, representing a 74.8 percent increase compared with the previous week.

Taiwan also reported 62 new severe domestic COVID-19 cases in a single week, marking the highest weekly total recorded in 2026.

Unlike mainland China, where NB.1.8.1 remains the leading reported lineage, Taiwan’s recent infections have mainly involved the PQ.16.1.1 sublineage. This strain is derived from NB.1.8.1 and belongs to the broader Omicron family.

Taiwan health officials have emphasized that vaccination continues to provide protection, particularly in reducing the risk of severe disease and hospitalization.

Questions Remain About COVID-19 Tracking and Transparency

The latest increase in infections has also renewed discussions about COVID-19 reporting and transparency. Critics have previously questioned whether official infection numbers from China fully represent the scale of outbreaks due to concerns about data availability and reporting practices.

Because COVID-19 surveillance methods differ between countries, comparing infection levels directly can be challenging. Official statistics, hospital reports, and community experiences may each provide different views of the overall situation.

Health experts continue to recommend monitoring hospitalization rates, severe illness numbers, vaccination coverage, and emerging variants rather than relying only on case counts.

Scientists Continue Debate Over COVID-19 Origins

At the same time, discussion about the origins of COVID-19 continues among researchers and policymakers worldwide.

Dr. Ashish Jha, former White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator under the Biden administration, recently stated that he believes a laboratory-related incident remains the most likely explanation for the pandemic’s origin. He made the comments during an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” program on August 2.

Jha said that no one in the United States knows the origin of the virus with certainty and called for additional transparency and accountability regarding available information.

The scientific community remains divided on the issue, with different researchers supporting different explanations based on available evidence.

What the New Summer Surge Means for Global Health

The latest COVID-19 increase in China highlights that the virus continues to evolve and circulate more than six years after the beginning of the pandemic. Although many countries have moved away from emergency pandemic measures, seasonal surges and new variants remain important public health concerns.

Experts say continued surveillance, vaccination efforts, access to medical care, and transparent reporting remain essential tools for managing future waves.

For individuals, health professionals generally recommend staying aware of local infection trends, following public health guidance, and taking precautions when respiratory illnesses are increasing.

The current summer surge in China serves as another reminder that COVID-19 remains an ongoing global health challenge. While the severity of future waves may vary, monitoring new variants and maintaining preparedness will continue to play an important role in protecting communities.
