Artificial intelligence is becoming a daily companion for millions of people. From managing work stress to navigating relationship struggles, AI chatbots are increasingly used as on demand emotional support tools. But can AI truly function as a safe and ethical mental health counselor?
A new study from Brown University suggests the answer is more complicated than many users might expect. Researchers found that even when AI systems are instructed to behave like trained therapists, they often fail to meet established professional and ethical standards in mental health care.

However, the new research warns that carefully crafted prompts alone do not guarantee safe or ethical therapeutic behavior.
The research team collaborated with mental health experts to evaluate how AI systems perform in counseling like conversations. Trained peer counselors conducted simulated therapy sessions with AI models using prompts designed to make the systems behave like cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavior therapy practitioners.
Three licensed psychologists independently reviewed the AI generated responses. Their goal was to assess whether the chatbots adhered to professional ethics standards typically required in psychotherapy practice.
The findings were presented at a joint conference hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and the Association for Computing Machinery. Because the research was presented at a conference, it is considered preliminary until published in a peer reviewed journal.
Researchers identified 15 distinct ethical risks. These were grouped into five major categories that reveal serious limitations in AI mental health counseling systems.

Human therapists operate within strict regulatory frameworks. Licensing boards, malpractice laws, and professional ethics codes exist to protect patients. When therapists make serious mistakes, they can be held accountable.
AI systems currently operate without comparable regulatory structures. There are no established oversight boards specifically governing large language model counselors.
Despite the study’s warnings, researchers acknowledged that AI could still play a valuable role in expanding access to mental health support.
