This does not mean that every outdoor worker is developing CKDu. It also does not mean that heat exposure alone causes chronic kidney disease.

Why More Research Is Needed
The reports emerging from Texas raise important questions, but they should not be interpreted as proof that a new epidemic of CKDu has been established in the state.
Researchers need consistent definitions, detailed medical records and information about workers' occupations, heat exposure, hydration, medications and environmental conditions to determine whether the cases represent CKDu or other forms of kidney disease.
The CDC has previously noted that the lack of a consistent case definition has made it difficult to compare CKDu findings across different populations.
That uncertainty makes continued research and early kidney screening particularly important.
