A salmonella outbreak affecting people across the UK has raised concerns about food safety, eggs and the risks associated with contaminated food. Health authorities have confirmed that one person has died and hundreds of people have become ill in an outbreak that may be linked to eggs imported from outside the UK.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said investigations are continuing alongside the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and other public health bodies. Officials have stressed that there is currently no evidence that UK-produced eggs are affected.

Salmonella outbreak in the UK

According to the latest information from the UKHSA, 207 cases of salmonella were identified between 11 August 2025 and 1 August 2026. Of these, 199 cases were reported in England, six in Scotland, one in Wales and one in Northern Ireland.

London recorded the highest number of confirmed cases in England, with 47 infections. Yorkshire and the Humber followed with 38 cases.

The outbreak has affected people across a wide age range, including babies and adults aged up to 90. While salmonella infection is often described as a short-term illness, the current outbreak has resulted in a significant number of hospital admissions.

Around 38 per cent of people affected by this outbreak required hospital treatment. Two people developed infections in their bloodstream that were considered potentially life-threatening. UKHSA has also confirmed one death associated with the outbreak.

Imported eggs being investigated

Health officials say the outbreak may be connected to eggs imported from outside the UK. Investigators have identified links involving imported eggs that were mainly used by food service and catering businesses, including restaurants and cafes.

The Food Standards Agency has said there is no evidence at present that UK-produced eggs are affected by the outbreak.

The investigation remains ongoing, meaning consumers should rely on official updates rather than speculation about specific brands, retailers or individual products.

For people concerned about food safety, the key message is to follow good food hygiene practices and ensure foods that require cooking are prepared thoroughly.

What are the symptoms of salmonella?

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause food poisoning and gastrointestinal illness. Common symptoms can include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever.

People may also feel generally unwell and experience abdominal discomfort.

Symptoms can begin within several hours or a few days after consuming contaminated food. In some circumstances, symptoms may take longer to appear.

Most salmonella infections are self-limiting, meaning people recover without specific treatment. However, the illness can become more serious in vulnerable people, including those with weakened immune systems.

Anyone who develops concerning symptoms should seek medical advice. UKHSA advises people who are worried about symptoms to contact their GP or an out-of-hours medical service.

How can you reduce the risk of salmonella?

Good kitchen hygiene is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of salmonella and other foodborne illnesses.

People should wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before preparing or handling food. Kitchen surfaces, utensils and chopping boards should also be cleaned regularly, particularly after handling raw foods.

Food should be cooked thoroughly, especially foods that may contain harmful bacteria. Avoiding cross-contamination is also important. Raw foods should be kept separate from ready-to-eat foods, and utensils used for raw ingredients should be cleaned before being used for other foods.

People experiencing symptoms of salmonella should avoid preparing food for other people where possible. This can help reduce the risk of spreading infection.

Why are eggs being linked to the outbreak?

Eggs are among the foods being investigated because health authorities have identified possible links to imported eggs used in catering and food service settings.

Salmonella contamination can occur when food becomes contaminated with the bacteria. Proper cooking and hygiene can help reduce the risk associated with contaminated ingredients.

However, the current investigation does not mean that all eggs are unsafe. The FSA has specifically stated that there is no evidence that UK-produced eggs are affected.

Consumers should therefore avoid making assumptions about all eggs or changing their diet based on unverified claims circulating online. Official advice from the UKHSA and FSA remains the most reliable source of information as the investigation develops.

Salmonella cases have raised wider concerns

The outbreak comes amid concerns about salmonella infections in England reaching their highest level in around a decade.

Food microbiology experts have suggested that wider changes in food supply chains and household food preparation could be worth investigating. Professor Kimon Andreas Karatzas of the University of Reading has discussed whether changes associated with the cost of living could influence food preparation habits and potentially increase opportunities for cross-contamination.

He has also pointed to the importance of examining patterns in salmonella outbreaks alongside other foodborne infections, including Campylobacter.

These factors do not establish a cause for the increase in salmonella cases, but they highlight why detailed epidemiological investigations are important.

What should people do now?

There is no need for consumers to panic. The investigation is focused on identifying the source of the outbreak and limiting further infections.

People can reduce their risk of salmonella by maintaining good hand hygiene, preventing cross-contamination and cooking food properly.

Anyone who develops diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, fever or other symptoms associated with food poisoning should monitor their condition and seek medical advice if they are concerned, particularly if symptoms are severe or the person affected is vulnerable.

People should also avoid handling food for others while experiencing symptoms where possible.

The investigation continues

The UK salmonella outbreak is being investigated by UKHSA, the Food Standards Agency and public health authorities. So far, officials have identified a possible connection with imported eggs, particularly those used by restaurants, cafes and other catering establishments.

The confirmed death and high proportion of hospital admissions demonstrate why salmonella should not always be treated as a minor stomach illness. While many people recover, some infections can become severe.

For now, the most important steps are straightforward: practise good food hygiene, cook food thoroughly, prevent cross-contamination and follow updates from official health and food safety authorities.
