Rescue Mission for UK Doctor’s Body Delayed by Harsh Weather on Pakistan’s Spantik Peak

Recovery efforts for Dr Asma Mushtaq remain on hold after heavy snowfall and strong winds force rescuers to retreat

Efforts to recover the body of UK-based gynaecologist Dr Asma Mushtaq from Pakistan’s Spantik Peak have suffered a major setback after severe weather conditions forced rescue teams to abandon their latest attempt.

Mushtaq, 34, died while descending the 7,027-metre Spantik mountain in the Karakoram range. She had successfully reached the summit before suffering a serious medical emergency at an altitude of around 6,400 metres.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan said she was in good health when she reached the summit but became critically unwell during the descent. Her death has since prompted a complex recovery operation aimed at bringing her body down from Camp 3 to Base Camp.

The latest rescue attempt was disrupted by heavy snowfall and strong winds. Teams travelling towards Camp 3 were forced to turn back after getting close to their destination and returned to Camp 2 because conditions had become too dangerous.

Pakistan’s information minister, Attaullah Tarar, said authorities remain committed to recovering Mushtaq’s body. A helicopter has reportedly been authorised to assist with the operation, while officials are also preparing alternative arrangements in case weather conditions prevent an aerial recovery.

Mr Tarar said that every possible effort would be made to complete the mission safely. He also confirmed that the Pakistani prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, was being kept informed about the situation.

Mushtaq was both a doctor and experienced climber

Originally from Lahore, Mushtaq was working in the UK as an obstetrics and gynaecology specialist. Outside her medical career, she was an enthusiastic mountaineer who documented many of her expeditions online.

Her previous climbing achievements included reaching the summit of Musa Ka Musallah, a 4,080-metre peak in Pakistan. She had also participated in expeditions to Rupal and Arandu.

Her ascent of Spantik represented another significant achievement in her climbing career. However, the descent proved fatal after she experienced what the Alpine Club described as a serious high-altitude medical emergency.

The exact circumstances surrounding her death, including questions about the expedition company and its response, are expected to be examined after the recovery operation has been completed and the climbing teams have safely returned.

The Alpine Club has said that any appropriate action will be considered following the investigation.

Extreme conditions complicate recovery

Recovering a body from an altitude of more than 6,000 metres is a highly dangerous task. Rescue workers must contend with freezing temperatures, thin air, steep terrain and rapidly changing weather.

At such elevations, helicopters can be particularly useful, but their operations are heavily dependent on visibility, wind speeds and other conditions. Strong winds and heavy snow can make flying too risky, forcing teams to rely on climbers travelling on foot.

The current situation demonstrates why mountain recovery missions can take considerably longer than expected.

Spantik, which rises to 7,027 metres, is located in the Karakoram range and presents significant challenges for climbers and rescue teams. Even experienced mountaineers can become vulnerable to altitude-related illness, particularly during descent after the physical demands of a summit attempt.

Another major recovery operation this month

The latest mission comes only weeks after Pakistan conducted another high-profile operation to recover climbers who died in an avalanche on Broad Peak.

That operation involved military helicopters, Pakistani and Nepali rescuers and the Pakistan Army. It took almost six days to bring the bodies down from the mountain, highlighting the scale of the logistical and physical challenges involved in high-altitude recoveries.

The operation to recover Mushtaq is similarly dependent on a suitable weather window. Rescue teams must carefully balance the need to retrieve her body with the safety of those attempting the mission.

For Mushtaq’s family, friends and colleagues, the continued delay is likely to be extremely difficult. However, sending rescuers into dangerous conditions could create additional casualties.

Authorities are therefore keeping teams at safer locations while monitoring the weather and considering the best way forward.

The helicopter option could provide an important means of reaching the higher camps if conditions improve enough for a safe flight. Ground teams may also attempt another approach when the weather becomes more favourable.

For now, the recovery effort remains constrained by the mountain’s severe conditions.

Mushtaq’s death is a tragic reminder of the risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering. Her successful ascent of Spantik was a significant achievement, but the dangers did not end when she reached the summit.

As authorities continue coordinating the recovery mission, the immediate objective is to bring her body safely back to Base Camp and ultimately return her to her family.
