A nationwide recall involving Graziers Raw Milk Cheese has expanded after federal health officials linked the products to a multistate outbreak of E. coli illnesses.

According to information released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 13 people in nine states have reportedly become ill after consuming the recalled cheese. Eight of those individuals were hospitalized.

The products were made by Sierra Nevada Cheese Company and are sold as grass-fed raw milk cheeses. The company initially announced a voluntary withdrawal of its raw milk medium cheddar after being notified about illnesses associated with the product. The recall has since been broadened to include all varieties of Graziers Raw Milk Cheese.

The affected varieties include medium cheddar, sharp cheddar, jalapeño jack, and Monterey jack.

Officials Urge Consumers to Check Their Refrigerators

Federal officials are advising consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers for any Graziers Raw Milk Cheese that may be subject to the recall.

The FDA has emphasized that consumers should not rely solely on the date or lot information when determining whether a product is affected. The agency said the investigation has not been narrowed to a particular production lot or date code.

That means consumers who are uncertain about whether a package is included should take a cautious approach.

The FDA specifically warned that the cheese can have a relatively long shelf life. As a result, some products could still be stored in household refrigerators or freezers even though they were purchased some time ago.

Consumers who have cheese without its original packaging may also have difficulty determining whether it is part of the recall. Federal officials advise throwing the product away if its recall status cannot be established.

People who purchased recalled cheese can contact the location where it was bought regarding a refund.

Illnesses Reported in Nine States

The reported illnesses have been spread across nine states.

California and Nevada have each recorded three cases, according to the surveillance information cited by federal authorities. Individual cases have also been reported in Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, and Utah.

The distribution of cases has prompted a nationwide response rather than a recall limited to one region.

Federal officials first contacted the cheese company on Sept. 24 after reviewing information concerning the illnesses. The FDA recommended that the company initiate a recall while investigators worked to determine how contamination occurred.

The investigation remains underway.

Officials have not yet identified a specific source of contamination, and authorities are also examining whether additional products could be affected.

What Is E. coli?

E. coli, short for Escherichia coli, refers to a large group of bacteria. While many strains are harmless and naturally occur in the digestive systems of humans and animals, certain strains can cause illness.

People can become infected by consuming contaminated food or water. Transmission can also occur through contaminated surfaces or inadequate food handling practices.

Symptoms can vary depending on the strain and the individual. Common symptoms associated with E. coli infections include diarrhea, abdominal pain or cramping, a low-grade fever, and reduced appetite.

Some infections are mild and resolve without specific treatment. Others can become considerably more serious.

According to medical guidance cited in connection with the outbreak, severe infections can sometimes result in complications that require hospitalization. In rare circumstances, E. coli infections can be fatal.

So far, no deaths have been reported in connection with the Graziers Raw Milk Cheese recall.

Why Raw Milk Products Require Extra Attention

Raw milk cheese is produced using milk that has not undergone pasteurization. Pasteurization is a heat-treatment process designed to reduce harmful microorganisms that may be present in milk.

Raw milk products have long been the subject of debate because some consumers seek them out for their traditional production methods or perceived differences in flavor. At the same time, public health authorities have repeatedly warned that unpasteurized dairy products can carry foodborne pathogens.

The current recall illustrates why food safety officials are urging consumers to pay close attention to product recalls, particularly when a product has a long shelf life.

The FDA's advice is straightforward: consumers who find recalled Graziers Raw Milk Cheese in their homes should not eat it.

What Consumers Should Do

Anyone who believes they have a recalled product should avoid tasting it to determine whether it is safe. Instead, the product should be discarded or handled according to the instructions provided by health officials.

Consumers should also take care when handling potentially contaminated food or packaging. Surfaces that come into contact with recalled products should be cleaned appropriately.

People who have eaten the recalled cheese should pay attention to possible symptoms.

Diarrhea, stomach cramps, abdominal discomfort, low fever, and loss of appetite can occur with E. coli infections. Anyone who develops concerning symptoms after consuming the recalled product should contact a healthcare professional and explain the possible food exposure.

Particular attention may be warranted when symptoms are severe, persistent, or worsening.

Investigation Continues

The recall remains an active food safety investigation. Federal officials are attempting to determine how the contamination occurred and whether additional products could be involved.

The fact that the recall has expanded from one cheese variety to all Graziers Raw Milk varieties underscores the importance of following updated information from the FDA and other public health agencies.

Consumers should not assume that a cheese is safe simply because it looks or smells normal. Foodborne pathogens cannot necessarily be detected by appearance, smell, or taste.

For households that may have purchased Graziers Raw Milk Cheese, checking stored dairy products and disposing of recalled items is the most direct way to follow the current federal guidance.

The outbreak also serves as a reminder that food recalls can change as investigators receive new information. Consumers should therefore consult official recall notices for the latest product details rather than relying on older social media posts, secondary reports, or information printed in previous news coverage.
