Bed bugs are once again causing concern across the UK, with reports of increasing infestations and growing worries about the insects becoming harder to eliminate.

The tiny pests have attracted particular attention in London, where residents have taken to social media to share experiences of finding bed bugs in homes, workplaces and, according to some claims, on public transport.

The situation has also raised questions about whether London's Tube network could be contributing to the spread. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence that London's public transport system is experiencing a widespread bed bug infestation.

Recent reports have highlighted another concern: some bed bugs appear to have developed resistance to insecticides that have traditionally been used to control them.

Why are bed bug cases increasing?

Bed bug problems are not new, but pest control professionals have reported an increase in cases in parts of the UK.

According to reporting by Metro, one London borough recorded a 40% rise in cases compared with 2025, while pest controller James Rhoades reported that his bed bug callouts had doubled over the same period.

Bed bugs can be particularly difficult to control because they are exceptionally good at hiding. They can remain inside mattresses, bed frames, furniture, cracks and other small spaces, often going unnoticed until people begin experiencing bites or discovering other signs of an infestation.

Another factor is insecticide resistance.

Bed bug expert Professor Chow-Yang Lee has said that insecticides are increasingly failing to kill the insects effectively. He has described this as an important factor behind the increase in infestations.

This does not mean that every bed bug population is resistant to every treatment. However, it does highlight why attempting to deal with an established infestation using random household sprays may not solve the problem.

What exactly are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are small parasitic insects belonging to the Cimicidae family. They feed on blood and are most active at night.

Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown and roughly the size of an apple seed. Their flat bodies allow them to hide in surprisingly small gaps, including around mattresses, headboards, furniture and cracks in walls or floors.

They usually feed every five to seven days, although they can survive for much longer periods without a meal.

Their bites can leave itchy red marks, often appearing in lines or clusters. However, not everyone reacts to bed bug bites, which means an infestation can sometimes develop without an obvious warning.

Female bed bugs can also reproduce quickly. A female may lay up to 10 eggs a day and can produce hundreds of eggs during her lifetime.

That ability to reproduce, combined with their skill at hiding, means an apparently small problem can become much more difficult to manage if it is left untreated.

Are bed bugs really spreading on the London Tube?

Social media users in London have reported seeing or being bitten by what they believe were bed bugs on public transport.

Some Reddit users have claimed to have encountered the insects on Tube lines and buses, while others have suggested that transport cleanliness could be responsible.

These reports should be treated cautiously.

Transport for London told Metro that it was not aware of recent bed bug sightings across its network. TfL also said that it continues to monitor the system and maintain its cleaning procedures.

According to the organisation, Tube trains receive daily cleaning before entering service. This includes seats, floors and other surfaces. Seats considered unsuitable for use can be replaced, while staff are trained to identify and report possible bed bugs.

Additional cleaning takes place regularly, with deeper cleaning of areas such as windows, ledges and interior panels every few days.

It is also important to understand that bed bugs are not necessarily a sign of poor hygiene.

These insects are primarily interested in access to a host. They can travel by attaching themselves to luggage, clothing and other personal belongings.

This means that someone can unintentionally bring bed bugs home after travelling, staying somewhere with an infestation or coming into contact with infested belongings.

How can you tell if you have bed bugs?

Bites are one possible warning sign, but they are not the only indication.

Other things to look for include tiny dark marks on mattresses, bedding or furniture. These can be caused by bed bug droppings. Small blood stains may also appear if an insect is accidentally crushed.

You may also find pale, translucent skins left behind as bed bugs grow.

In more serious infestations, people may notice an unusual musty or sweet-smelling odour.

Because bed bugs can hide so effectively, finding one insect should not automatically be dismissed as an isolated incident. Checking nearby areas can help determine whether there are additional signs.

How can you reduce the risk after travelling?

Prevention is generally easier than dealing with an established infestation.

After returning from a trip, inspect luggage carefully, paying particular attention to seams, pockets and folds. Clothing should also be checked before being put away.

Rentokil recommends washing clothing at a temperature of at least 60°C after travelling, including items that were not worn.

Regularly checking belongings after returning home can also reduce the chance of an unwanted visitor settling into your bedroom.

If you are particularly concerned, washing clothes worn outside the home at a high temperature can provide an additional precaution.

What should you do if you find bed bugs?

If you believe you have discovered bed bugs, avoid moving potentially infested furniture or belongings from one room to another. Doing so could spread the insects further around the property.

Wash affected fabric items at a high temperature where possible. Items that cannot be washed can be carefully vacuumed, paying attention to cracks and crevices.

A specialist mattress encasement designed for bed bugs may also help contain insects around the mattress.

However, established infestations can be extremely difficult to eliminate without professional treatment. Pest control specialists can assess the property and determine the most appropriate approach.

The increasing reports of insecticide resistance also make it important to avoid relying solely on repeated applications of household sprays or foggers.

What about bed bug bites?

For most people, bed bug bites are irritating rather than dangerous, although individual reactions can vary.

A cold compress can help reduce discomfort. Washing the affected area may also be useful, while some people may require pharmacy treatments such as mild hydrocortisone cream or antihistamines to manage itching or an allergic reaction.

According to the information reported by Metro, the NHS says bed bug bites generally clear within around a week.

If bites remain particularly painful, swollen or intensely itchy despite treatment, medical advice should be sought. This is especially important if swelling or pain begins to spread.

The bottom line

Bed bugs are a genuine pest control problem, but social media reports should not automatically be interpreted as proof of a widespread infestation across London's transport network.

The insects are highly effective hitchhikers and can travel on luggage, clothing and other belongings. Their ability to hide and reproduce quickly can make infestations difficult to identify and remove.

For households, careful checks after travelling, washing clothes at appropriate temperatures and acting quickly when signs appear can all help reduce the risk.

If an infestation is confirmed, professional pest control may be necessary, particularly where insecticide resistance makes conventional DIY treatments less effective.
