A new once-daily weight loss medication has become available through pharmacies across the UK, giving eligible patients another option alongside injectable treatments. The tablet, called Foundayo, contains the active ingredient orforglipron and has been developed by pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.

The UK has become the first country in Europe to approve orforglipron, marking another development in the rapidly expanding market for GLP-1-based weight management treatments.

The arrival of Foundayo could be particularly relevant for people who are unable or unwilling to use injectable weight loss medicines. However, like other prescription treatments, it is not suitable for everyone and should only be used under appropriate medical supervision.

What is Foundayo?

Foundayo is a once-daily oral medicine containing orforglipron. It belongs to a class of medicines that act on pathways involved in appetite, blood sugar regulation and weight management.

The medicine has been authorised by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, known as the MHRA. According to information reported by The Independent, Foundayo is licensed for adults with a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or above. It may also be prescribed to people with a BMI between 27 and 30 when they have at least one weight-related health condition.

In addition to its use in weight management, orforglipron can help improve blood sugar control in people with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes.

Unlike injectable weight loss medicines, Foundayo is taken as a tablet once a day. The reported dosing schedule begins at 0.8mg, with the dose increasing through several stages to a maximum reported dose of 17.2mg. Patients are expected to spend at least one month at each dose level.

Why is the new tablet significant?

The popularity of weight loss injections has increased significantly in recent years, but injections are not suitable or desirable for everybody.

Some patients may find injections difficult to administer, while others may simply prefer taking a tablet. The availability of an oral treatment therefore gives healthcare professionals another potential option when discussing weight management with eligible patients.

Henry Gregg, chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, described the introduction as significant, particularly for patients who cannot or do not want to take injectable medicines.

The launch also follows the arrival of an oral version of Wegovy in the UK. This means patients and healthcare professionals now have greater choice among prescription treatments for weight management.

However, greater availability does not mean that these medicines are appropriate for casual or unsupervised use. Weight loss medications are prescription treatments and should form part of an overall approach to managing obesity and related health conditions.

How does Foundayo work?

Orforglipron is designed to work through the GLP-1 pathway. GLP-1 is a hormone involved in appetite regulation and glucose metabolism.

Medicines that act on this pathway can influence feelings of hunger and fullness, while also helping regulate blood glucose. These effects can contribute to weight loss for people who meet the relevant medical criteria.

The exact results can vary considerably between individuals. Factors such as starting weight, diet, physical activity, other medical conditions and adherence to treatment can influence outcomes.

Patients should therefore avoid comparing their expected results directly with figures from advertisements, clinical studies or other people's experiences.

Is Foundayo available on the NHS?

Although Foundayo is now available through UK pharmacies, its availability as a private prescription should not be confused with universal NHS access.

Eli Lilly has said it is working with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, or NICE, as the medicine undergoes assessment for potential use within the NHS in England.

NICE assessments can consider factors including clinical effectiveness, cost effectiveness and the circumstances in which a medicine should be offered.

This means patients should check the current arrangements in their area and speak with an appropriate healthcare professional if they believe they may qualify for NHS weight management treatment.

Access can vary depending on local services, eligibility criteria and NHS commissioning arrangements.

What should patients consider before taking it?

Anyone considering Foundayo should obtain it through a legitimate, regulated healthcare provider or pharmacy.

The National Pharmacy Association has highlighted concerns about counterfeit and unlicensed versions of oral weight loss medicines. Because tablets can be easier to manufacture and distribute illegally than some injectable products, patients should be especially cautious when buying medicines online.

A medicine purchased from an unverified website may contain the wrong ingredient, an incorrect dose or potentially harmful contaminants.

Patients should also tell their healthcare professional about other medicines they take and any relevant medical conditions before starting treatment. The suitability of a GLP-1 medicine depends on an individual's circumstances, and treatment decisions should be personalised.

People should not increase their dose more quickly than instructed or take more medicine in an attempt to accelerate weight loss.

A growing choice of weight loss treatments

The introduction of Foundayo represents another step in the development of oral alternatives to injectable weight loss medicines.

For some eligible patients, the convenience of a once-daily tablet could make treatment more acceptable. For healthcare professionals, another licensed option may provide greater flexibility when considering how best to manage obesity and related health problems.

At the same time, the growing number of weight loss medicines means consumers need reliable information. Prescription treatments are not a substitute for professional medical advice, and claims about rapid or effortless weight loss should be approached carefully.

Foundayo's UK launch is therefore important, but its availability should be viewed as part of a broader conversation about obesity treatment, long-term health and access to regulated medical care.
