What is vanillin and why is it used in vapes?
Vanillin is the principal compound responsible for the familiar flavour and aroma associated with vanilla. It is used in a wide range of food, cosmetic and consumer products, and it can also be added to e-cigarette liquids to create or enhance flavour.
Researchers led by Professor Prue Talbot at the University of California, Riverside, focused on vanillin because of its presence in some vaping liquids and its interaction with a cellular receptor known as TRPV4.
The research team exposed embryonic stem cells to different concentrations of vanillin to investigate how the chemical affected their behaviour.
According to the findings, very low concentrations were associated with changes in the ability of early-stage cells to develop into different cell types. At higher concentrations, the researchers observed cell death.
These observations are potentially important because early embryonic development depends on cells multiplying, specialising and organising themselves correctly.

He also noted that more research is needed to establish whether laboratory observations correspond to measurable effects in humans.
Professor Marian Knight, professor of maternal and child population health at the University of Oxford, made a similar point.
She highlighted the difference between exposing cells directly to a chemical under laboratory conditions and the much more complicated process through which a developing embryo could encounter a substance following maternal vaping.
That distinction is crucial.
A laboratory experiment can identify a potential biological mechanism and provide an important warning signal. It cannot, on its own, establish that pregnant people who vape will experience the same biological effects or that their babies will suffer developmental problems.
Does this mean vaping during pregnancy is proven to be dangerous?
The new study does not prove that vanillin in e-cigarettes causes developmental problems in human pregnancies.
Instead, it adds to a wider body of scientific concern about exposure to vaping chemicals during pregnancy.
It is also important to distinguish between smoking traditional cigarettes and using e-cigarettes. Cigarette smoking exposes the body to thousands of chemicals produced through combustion and is well established as a major health risk. For smokers who are pregnant, stopping smoking is particularly important. Healthcare professionals can provide advice about evidence-based ways to quit and can help people weigh the risks and benefits of different approaches.
The key message from the latest research is therefore one of caution rather than certainty.
A developing area of scientific research
The vanillin findings highlight how much scientists are still learning about the chemicals used in modern vaping products.
Further studies will be needed to determine how vanillin behaves in the body after vaping, what concentrations can reach maternal blood, whether meaningful amounts can reach a developing fetus, and whether the cellular effects observed in laboratory experiments occur during real pregnancies.
Until those questions are answered, the findings should be viewed as an early warning signal rather than definitive evidence of harm.
For pregnant people, the safest approach is to discuss vaping and smoking with a healthcare professional rather than relying on assumptions about the safety of individual ingredients.
