Consumers who purchased certain varieties of Prospector gourmet popcorn may want to check their pantry after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a recall affecting thousands of bags sold across the country.

The recall involves approximately 21,400 bags of Prospector Popcorn distributed across 43 states and the District of Columbia. According to an FDA enforcement alert dated Aug. 14, 2026, the company withdrew four popcorn varieties after discovering inaccurate nutritional information on their labels.

The affected products include Chocolate Mocha, Maple Walnut Ice Cream, Fudge Brownie, and Belgian Chocolate Toffee. The recalled products were sold in several different package sizes, and all affected varieties have expiration dates on or before July 10, 2027.

Why Was the Popcorn Recalled?

The recall was initiated because some of the nutritional information printed on the product labels was incorrect. Federal officials classified the products as misbranded because the declared amounts of certain dietary components did not accurately reflect the products.

Importantly, the company says the recall does not involve contamination, an undeclared allergen, or a manufacturing defect that would make the popcorn unsafe to consume.

Prospector Popcorn management told NTD that the issue was strictly related to labeling. The company said the products themselves are safe and that the recall does not represent a health risk associated with eating the popcorn.

Even when a food does not present a direct safety hazard, accurate labeling is important because consumers rely on nutrition information when making dietary choices. Incorrect information can be particularly significant for people who closely monitor nutrients such as carbohydrates, cholesterol, potassium, calcium, iron, or vitamin D.

Four Popcorn Flavors Included

The FDA recall covers four Prospector Popcorn varieties.

The Chocolate Mocha Gourmet Popcorn was sold in 1.5 ounce bags. Its label understated carbohydrates and cholesterol.

Maple Walnut Ice Cream Gourmet Popcorn was sold in 3.5 ounce bags. According to federal officials, its label overstated potassium and calcium while understating iron.

Fudge Brownie Gourmet Popcorn was available in both 1.5 ounce and 3.5 ounce bags. Its labeling overstated potassium and calcium.

Belgian Chocolate Toffee Gourmet Popcorn was sold in 3.5 ounce bags. Its label understated iron and overstated vitamin D.

The company conducted an internal review after being informed about the initial labeling problem involving the Chocolate Mocha product. According to company management, that review uncovered the additional products included in the recall.

Prospector said it has begun strengthening its quality control procedures to help prevent similar labeling problems in the future.

Where Were the Products Sold?

The recalled popcorn was distributed widely throughout the United States.

The affected states include Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The District of Columbia was also included in the distribution area.

Because the products were sold across such a broad geographic area, consumers who regularly purchase specialty or gourmet popcorn may wish to review the products they have at home.

FDA Assigns Different Recall Classifications

The FDA assigned different risk classifications to the recalled varieties on Aug. 14.

Chocolate Mocha received a Class 2 recall classification. The other three products, Fudge Brownie, Maple Walnut Ice Cream, and Belgian Chocolate Toffee, were classified as Class 3 recall events.

FDA recall classifications generally reflect the potential health consequences associated with use of or exposure to a recalled product. A Class 2 recall generally involves a situation in which use of the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, although the probability of serious adverse effects is considered remote. A Class 3 recall generally involves products that are unlikely to cause adverse health consequences.

In this case, Prospector Popcorn maintains that the recall is based on incorrect nutritional information rather than contamination or another direct food safety concern.

What Consumers Should Know

Consumers who have purchased one of the recalled products should compare the product in their possession with the details provided in the FDA recall notice.

The affected popcorn varieties have expiration dates on or before July 10, 2027. Consumers should also pay attention to the flavor and package size because the recall applies to specific products and sizes.

People who depend on accurate nutrition labels for dietary management may want to take particular care when checking products covered by the recall. The inaccurate information concerns different nutrients depending on the flavor.

Consumers with questions about a particular package should consult the official FDA recall information and information provided by Prospector Popcorn.

Company Responds to the Recall

Prospector Popcorn said it takes the labeling issue seriously and has already begun implementing additional quality control measures.

The company explained that its team was addressing the original Chocolate Mocha labeling problem when it decided to conduct a broader audit of its product line. That review resulted in the identification of the other affected varieties.

Prospector also emphasized that maintaining consumer and retail partner confidence remains a major priority.

The company has operated since 2014 and has a distinctive employment mission. According to company management, approximately 75 percent of its workers identify as having a disability.

Prospector says its mission is to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities by providing meaningful employment. The company stated that product quality and accurate labeling are part of that broader commitment.

Bottom Line

The FDA recall affects about 21,400 bags of Prospector gourmet popcorn distributed across 43 states and Washington, D.C. Four varieties are involved: Chocolate Mocha, Maple Walnut Ice Cream, Fudge Brownie, and Belgian Chocolate Toffee.

The recall stems from inaccurate nutritional information rather than contamination, an undeclared allergen, or a product defect. Consumers should check their popcorn against the FDA's official recall details, particularly the flavor, package size, and expiration date.

As food recalls can be updated, consumers should rely on the latest information from the FDA and the manufacturer when determining whether a particular product is affected.
