Arthritis Drug Shows Promise for Hair Regrowth in People With Severe Alopecia Areata

Now, new research suggests that an arthritis medication may offer a promising new option for patients struggling with significant hair loss.
A recent clinical study found that upadacitinib, marketed under the brand name Rinvoq, helped many people with severe alopecia areata achieve substantial hair regrowth. The findings have generated excitement among researchers and dermatologists because the drug produced results that compared favorably with several currently available treatments.
Understanding Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles. This attack disrupts normal hair growth and causes hair to fall out, often in small, round patches on the scalp. Researchers evaluated two dosage levels of upadacitinib: 15 milligrams and 30 milligrams daily. Success was defined as achieving enough hair regrowth to cover at least 80% of the scalp after six months of treatment.
The results were encouraging.
After six months:
- 45% of participants taking the 15 mg dose achieved at least 80% scalp coverage.
- 55% of participants taking the 30 mg dose reached the same milestone.
These outcomes suggest that a substantial proportion of patients experienced meaningful hair regrowth within a relatively short period.
Even More Impressive Regrowth Results
Beyond the primary goal of the study, many participants achieved even greater levels of hair restoration.
Researchers reported that:
- More than 35% of participants taking the 15 mg dose achieved approximately 90% scalp coverage.
- Nearly 46% of those on the 30 mg dose reached similar levels of regrowth.
- Around 13% of patients receiving the lower dose experienced complete scalp regrowth.
- Approximately 23% of patients taking the higher dose achieved total scalp regrowth.

Benefits Beyond the Scalp
One of the most challenging aspects of severe alopecia areata is that hair loss is not always limited to the scalp. Many patients also lose their eyebrows and eyelashes, which can affect appearance, eye protection, and confidence.
According to the study findings, participants receiving the higher dose of upadacitinib frequently experienced regrowth in these areas as well. This broader response could provide additional quality of life benefits for patients whose symptoms extend beyond scalp hair loss.
How Does It Compare With Existing Treatments?
Several JAK inhibitors are already used to treat alopecia areata, but their effectiveness varies.
According to data referenced in the research:
- Baricitinib (Olumiant) has helped approximately 35% to 40% of patients achieve significant scalp coverage.
- Ritlecitinib (Litfulo) has shown success rates of around 23%.
- Deuruxolitinib (Leqselvi) has demonstrated success rates near 31%.
While direct comparisons between separate clinical trials should always be interpreted carefully, the results observed with upadacitinib appear highly competitive and may surpass some existing treatment options.
These findings suggest that the medication could become an important addition to the growing range of therapies available for alopecia areata.
Regulatory Status and Availability
Despite the promising results, upadacitinib is not yet fully approved in all regions specifically for the treatment of alopecia areata.
AbbVie, the manufacturer of Rinvoq, has been pursuing regulatory approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of severe alopecia areata in adults and adolescents. Until such approval is granted, physicians may prescribe the medication for alopecia as an off label treatment, meaning it is used for a condition outside its currently approved indications.
The situation is different in Europe. The medication recently received approval within the European Union for the treatment of alopecia areata, providing eligible patients with another therapeutic option.
A Potential Turning Point for Patients
The emergence of JAK inhibitors has transformed the treatment landscape for alopecia areata over the past several years. Conditions that once had limited treatment possibilities now have multiple targeted therapies designed specifically to address the underlying immune mechanisms driving hair loss.
Upadacitinib's latest clinical results add to this momentum. For patients with severe disease, particularly those who have not responded well to existing treatments, the drug may eventually offer another pathway toward meaningful hair restoration.
While more long term data and regulatory reviews are still needed, the study highlights the growing potential of precision medicines in managing autoimmune conditions.
